The Modüla™ Sharpening System: with three convenient diamond coated grit levels designed for effortless, consistent results without damaging your knife. It’s ideally suited to both Modüla™ knives and most Western-style symmetrical blades, giving you pro-level results at home or anywhere.
Designed to take the guesswork out of sharpening this guide covers everything from grit selection and sharpening technique to mounting and care.
Jump To:
Wipe Clean After Use: Use a dry cloth or soft brush to remove any residue.
No oil or water needed: Unlike whetstones, the diamond coating works best dry.
Store in a dry place: Such as a drawer when not mounted.
Rock, don’t drag: Use a gentle rocking motion to sharpen your knives. (Your Modula sharpener isn't a common drag-through gadget).
Sharpen + hone in one head: Apply firmer pressure deeper in the channel to engage the diamonds for sharpening, and lighter strokes at the smooth top section to hone.
Unlike common drag-through sharpeners that can damage blades, Modüla™ uses a gentle rocking motion. Move the knife edge back and forth through the diamond-coated fingers, allowing the correct micro-serrations to form naturally along the edge. This technique ensures a cleaner, sharper edge with minimal wear.
1. Permanent Mount:
This is a good option if you would like to leave your sharpeners always ready to go on your workshop or kitchen counter top, cutting board, or any other object. Simply screw down through the 4 heart-shaped holes in the base, or the 2 larger key holes, into any wood surface or custom handle of your preference.
2. Keyhole Screw Mounting:
Use a single screw mounted in the corner of a cutting board, with the base of the screw head protruding above the board by around 2mm. The keyhole slot on the sharpener head can be directly dropped over the screw head, allowing for quick and convenient sharpening and removal for storage in seconds.
3. Bamboo Case Mount:
Utilize the bamboo case that house your Solidteknics Modula knives. The case features two screw heads mounted at the end, where the Modula sharpener heads can be attached directly via the 2 keyhole slots in the sharpener sides. This setup allows for sharpening while holding onto the bamboo case as a long and stable handle. Once sharpening is complete, unhook your Modula head from the screws and store it in a drawer.
4. Trilobite Handle:
Use with our die-cast aluminium handle for a standalone sharpening unit. It features rubber feet underneath to ensure stability during use. Simply pull out the Trilobite handle, sharpen your knife, and then store it away securely. You can leave a single stage Modula sharpener screwed onto the Trilobite handle, or quickly hook any Modula stage onto the keyhole pivot pin, just like screw mounts on cutting boards, then just as quickly unhook and store the sharpener heads after use.
Each stage in the Modüla™ system offers a different grit level for progressive sharpening and honing, and are clearly engraved for easy identification (with the 400 grit head noticeably taller). Use one or all three, depending on the condition of your knife.
Ultimately, the choice of sharpener head depends on your specific needs and preferences. Whether restoring old, worn knives, looking for everyday sharpness, or finely-honed precision cutting, the modular sharpening system offers every option to suit your requirements. If in doubt, start with the 1000 grit sharpener: the best all-rounder!
Worn and blunt: For very worn blades that require reshaping and restoration, opt for the 400 grit Modular sharpener. This coarse grit quickly removes old, rounded material and establishes 15-degree bevels on each side. This 'regrind' stage is very coarse, so needs to be followed by the 1000 grit sharpener and 2000 grit hone for true pro results.
Good, but not very sharp: If your knives are in good condition and need regular sharpening for 'rough everyday use,' the 1000 grit modular sharpener is fantastic. It leaves knives with a slightly 'toothy' sharp edge for everyday tasks and particularly excels at tough cutting. However, it is less finely honed than the 2000 grit sharpener for the finest slicing.
Opt for Razor-Sharp Edges: For knives that require razor-sharp edges (how we prefer most blades!), choose the 2000 grit modular sharpener. This fine grit quickly hones the edge of your knives to perfection, leaving them razor-sharp and ready for precision cutting.
When you need all Three Sharpener Heads: If you're transitioning from very worn knives to razor-sharp ones, regrinding first with the 400 grit coarse Modula sharpener, you must use all three sharpener heads in sequence. Start with the 400 grit sharpener for reshaping, then the 1000 grit sharpener for everyday sharpening, and finish with the 2000 grit sharpener for fine honing.
Q. I'm a knife sharpening notice, is this system good for me?
Yes! Our new Modula Sharpening System is so simple to use, it's perfect for everyday home cooks. There's no skill required as the angles are perfectly set for you!
Q. Can I use my Modüla™ Sharpener heads to sharpen other generic knives?
Yes, you can use your Modüla™ Sharpener heads to sharpen any Western-style knife! Just ensure you are using the correct rocking motion, and you'll be able to get a pro edge on any of your existing symmetrical knife blades.
Q. Can I use the Modüla™ Sharpener heads to sharpen my Söliditi™ knives?
No, we don't recommend this. As the blades of our purist Söliditi™ knives are single-bevel, they need to be hand-sharpened using whetstones (like our InversionEdge™ Sharpening System) to maintain their single-bevel edge.
Q. I'm confused with the different sharpening head options. Do I need all three?
It really depends on the condition of your knives. If they are really blunt and damaged, your knives would benefit from the coarse sharpener head (the 400 grit) to help bring it remedy the edge, followed by the 2000 grit to make it nice and sharp. Ideal for the everyday home cook! If you like to do really fine slicing, like sashimi, the 400 grit will help you achieve the finest and sharpest of edges.
If your knives are in an OK condition and you're looking for one sharpener to help maintain them and keep them sharp, the 2000 grit is a great everyday sharpener which will keep your knives more than sharp enough for your everyday food prep tasks.
Q. What is the life expectancy of the sharpener heads?
With significant use, the diamond coating will wear down. However, the benefit of our diamond coatings is once this occurs, you're still left with a super fine honer, just like a traditional whet steel (the smooth round rod usually left untouched in knife block sets), though with more accuracy. Even when worn, they're multi-functional.
Q. Why did you opt for a diamond-coated sharpener?
While Japanese water stones are said to give the finest results, this method is tricky and overkill for maintaining Western symmetrical edges for most cooks. Our Modula sharpener isn't a common drag-through gadget. It's designed to be used with a motion that replicates a swipe across a stone while removing human angle error.
